Creggan - Kickhams
2008 was a historic year for CLG S Ciceam an Creagán with the opening of two new pitches and new club premises. Work was completed on all of the projects on schedule which is testament to the extremely hard working Committees and club persons who invested many, many long hours in to these ventures.
The projects included:
- 140m x 85m GAA sand mattress grass playing pitch with ballstops and a surrounding running/walking Track;
- 100m x 42.5m third generation synthetic floodlit playing pitch with ballstops and fully enclosed fencing;
- New clubhouse/pavilion to include four changing rooms, physiotherapy room, referees changing area, a fully equipped gymnasium, a large function room, conference facilities and public toilets.
The club are running a Gala weekend, starting on Friday 17th October, to celebrate the achievements made, and honour the hard work that was put in by countless people, too many to mention, over the past year. This will be kicked off with a formal black tie dinner and will culminate in a programme of matches and activities for all ages and codes to participate in and enjoy.
On the field of play Creggan enjoyed success in both codes with our hurlers capturing the first silverware of the season when they won the Abbey Cup (South West Divisional Championship) in June, defeating St. Endas of Belfast in the final in what was a determined and gutsy team performance. Unfortunately our senior hurlers could not secure a second trophy when they were defeated in the final of the (North Antrim) McCaughan Cup. They have now completed their ACHL Div. 4B games where they finished close to the top of the league which is a credible achievement for the team.
At juvenile hurling level, Creggan retained the SW Feile U14 trophy by defeating near neighbours Tir na nOg in the final. Also, for the first time our U16 hurlers competed in the North Antrim Div.1 league. They competed against the so-called hurling strongholds which they more than held their own against, and this young group can be proud of their performances this year.
The U16 hurlers again, like last year, captured the North Antrim 'B' Championship trophy and will now play in the All County 'B' final against St. Galls. The club wishes them the very best of luck for this final, which has yet to be played.
Our Under 12 Footballers suffered more heartbreak this year when in a repeat of last year's League Shield final they were again beaten by St. Patricks Lisburn after taking the game to extra time. The young boys can be proud of their efforts nonetheless after having a good year.
Our U16 Footballers have had a good year, with this group of players reaching the SW Antrim Divisional Championship (Breslin Cup) final where they were narrowly beaten by Rasharkin. They exacted revenge however by beating the same team en route to reaching the SW Antrim Divisional League final which at the time of writing has yet to be played. Good luck to the young lads and here's hoping for the right result.
Creggan Minor Footballers
The Senior Footballers have consolidated their status as a top four Division 1 team and they had the honour of participating in the Kilmacud All-Ireland Sevens tournament for the third year in succession. This competition has proved to be an extremely enjoyable experience for the players and the club, with many making a weekend out of it by attending the All-Ireland Football Final at Croke Park.
Our Reserve Footballers are also having a great year as they currently sit atop the ACFL Div.5 and remain unbeaten at the time of writing. They are firmly on course to win this league and so get promoted to Division 4 for next year. The Reserves also contested the SW Antrim Divisional Championship final (McCormick Cup) against Cargin where they were narrowly defeated by two points.
At County level, Creggan had representation in the County Senior Football team in the form of Mark Dougan and in the County Minor Football team Odhran McLarnon also represented the club with distinction.
Martin Johnston followed up last year's Vocational Schools Dual All Star award with another All Star award in hurling, while Dermot McCann received a Colleges All Star award for football. Creggan also had a number of juvenile members represented in the North Antrim Hurling Development Squads in Garron Tower. All of these club men can be immensely proud of their achievements.
