Antrim footballers won the Tommy Murphy Cup when they beat Wicklow by 3-12 to 1-15 at Croke Park and in doing so gained revenge for defeat at the hands of Garden County in last year’s final.
Trailing by five points at one stage in the first half Antrim hit back with goals from the full forward line of Kevin Brady, Thomas McCann and Ciaran Close to open up a 3-6 to 1-9 lead by the break.
The pace dropped a little in the second half as Antrim missed a couple of goal chances that would have sealed the win but a series of points kept them three clear with time almost up.
When Wicklow won a ‘45’ in the dying seconds Antrim fans must have had their hearts in their mouths, fearing a repeat of last years last gasp winner by the Garden county. However the danger was cleared and Jody Gormley’s men held on for a hard-fought but deserved victory.
