Cut Me A Hurl

I

“Cut me a hurl”, said the sturdy youth;
His limbs were straight and strong.
I liked his eyes of budding truth
Alight to right some wrong.
“My mates play other games”, he said,
I saw his proud lip curl,
“I’ll play the game my grand-dad play’d –
I want a hurl”.

Setanta the Saffron Óg Hurler mascot II

“Cut me a hurl”, said the winsome lass,
Her brown eyes smiled at me,
“For I can take a camog pass
Too fast for you to see.
I hold my left hand down like all,
I strike without a turn;
I love to hit a flying ball –
Cut me a hurl”.

III

“Tut me a huddle”, said the lisping boy,
As he climbed a weary knee.
My chain and medals were his joy;
“What are they, dad?” said he.
The light of God was in his face,
His head had many a curl,
With pleading eyes he pressed his case –
“Tut me a huddle”.

IV
So I cut the hurls in the ashen lane
When Christmas fires burned clear.
I shaped them true with serried grain
When Springtime days were near.
Mayhap in life’s more serious play.
Or in some final’s whirl,
You’ll bless the hour the children say –
“Cut me a hurl”.
